RV Insurance in Florida

Florida counts a motorhome as a private passenger vehicle, so it carries PIP and property damage coverage like your car. We quote motorhome, travel trailer, and fifth-wheel policies with carriers we vet, including full-time use.

What’s Covered

What RV Insurance in Florida Covers

Motorhome Liability

A registered motorhome must carry personal injury protection and property damage liability of $10,000 each. We also quote bodily injury limits, since the state minimums leave injuries you cause to other people unpaid.

Physical Damage

Physical damage coverage repairs the coach, travel trailer, or fifth-wheel itself after a crash, theft, fire, or falling tree. Ask how each carrier values an older rig, because that sets the claim check.

Towable Coverage

Florida law treats a trailer as part of the vehicle pulling it, so crash liability comes from the truck or SUV policy. Damage to the trailer itself needs its own physical damage coverage.

Personal Belongings

An auto policy covers the vehicle, not the clothing, electronics, bikes, and camping gear packed inside. RV personal effects coverage picks those up, and owners who travel for months often raise the limit.

Campsite Liability

Once the RV is parked and set up, an injury at your site falls outside the liability that follows driving. Campsite liability answers for a guest who trips over a leveling block or awning line.

Full-timer Coverage

When the RV is where you live year-round, this add-on extends liability closer to what a homeowners policy provides. Not every carrier writes it, so we raise it at the start of a quote.

Storm and Storage

An RV sitting in a storage lot during a hurricane is covered for wind and flood under the RV’s own physical damage coverage, not a home policy. Some carriers rate low-lying storage differently.

Pairs With Your Car

Your truck or SUV policy carries the liability while you tow, and Florida’s $10,000 property damage minimum can run out fast with a 35-foot trailer behind you. We quote tow vehicle limits alongside the RV.

Who It’s For

RV Owners Who Need a Closer Look

01

Motorhome Owners

A registered motorhome carries the same PIP and property damage requirement as a car, plus contents and campsite exposures a car policy never touches.

02

Trailer and Fifth-wheel Owners

Registration asks for no insurance, which leaves the trailer and everything in it unprotected unless you add physical damage and contents coverage.

03

Full-time RVers

If the RV is your only home, a recreational policy’s liability may fall short, so we look for carriers that write full-timer coverage.

04

Seasonal Visitors

Keep a motorhome in Florida more than 90 days in a year and it needs the state’s PIP and property damage minimums, even with out-of-state plates.

Our Process

How We Quote an RV

1

Describe the RV and Its Use

Tell us which of Florida’s eight RV types you own, plus the year, make, and length, and whether you travel on weekends, spend a season on the road, or live in it full time.

2

We Check What Tows It

For a travel trailer or fifth-wheel, the truck or SUV policy carries the towing liability, so we read its limits first. For a motorhome, we start from Florida’s PIP and property damage requirement.

3

Compare Quotes and Bind

A licensed agent lays out each carrier’s liability, physical damage, contents, and deductible in the same order, along with any storage questions. You pick one, and we bind it and send proof of coverage.

“Absolutely thrilled with the service Anna provided for both our car and homeowners insurance. She went above and beyond for us and our savings was remarkable!”

Common Questions

Florida RV and Motorhome Coverage, Answered

Yes, a registered motorhome in Florida must carry PIP coverage plus property damage liability, $10,000 of each, the same as a car. The no-fault law, s. 627.732(3)(a), F.S., defines a motor vehicle as a self-propelled vehicle with four or more wheels licensed for highway use, and it names a camper or motor home as a private passenger vehicle when it is not used mainly for business.

No. FLHSMV does not ask for proof of insurance to register a travel trailer or fifth-wheel, under its procedures RS-36 and RS-04. Section 627.732(3), F.S., counts a trailer as part of the vehicle towing it, so liability for a towing crash comes from the truck or SUV policy. Damage to the trailer and the gear inside stays uninsured until you add RV physical damage and contents coverage.

Florida recognizes eight recreational vehicle types in s. 320.01(1)(b), F.S. They are the travel trailer, camping trailer, truck camper, motor home, private motor coach, van conversion, park trailer, and fifth-wheel trailer. A travel trailer can be no wider than 8.5 feet and no longer than 40 feet. The type matters for insurance, because the PIP law turns on whether the vehicle moves under its own power.

It does once the motorhome stays in Florida more than 90 days in any 365-day period. At that point s. 627.733(2), F.S., requires the owner to carry the state’s $10,000 PIP and $10,000 property damage minimums, even with another state’s registration. Seasonal visitors who winter here for four months or longer cross that line and should update the policy before day 91.

It is not mandatory, but Florida includes it automatically on any motorhome policy with bodily injury liability unless a named insured rejects it in writing. That rule is in s. 627.727(1), F.S., and covers vehicles registered or garaged in Florida. Once you reject it or choose lower limits, the carrier does not have to restore it at renewal unless you ask in writing.

Florida does not require bodily injury liability to register a motorhome, only PIP and property damage. After certain crashes or an unpaid judgment, the financial responsibility law in ss. 324.021(7) and 324.051, F.S., can require proof of $10,000 per person, $20,000 per crash, and $10,000 in property damage, and the state suspends your license and registration until you show it.
