Coverage
Umbrella Insurance in Florida
Florida requires no bodily injury coverage to register a car, and owners can be liable when someone they lend it to crashes. We write personal umbrella policies above your home, auto, and boat limits through A-rated carriers we vet.

What’s Covered
Where a Personal Umbrella Pays
Auto Liability Overflow
Once your auto bodily injury limit is used up in a crash you cause, the umbrella pays the rest of a covered judgment up to its own limit. Florida registration requires no bodily injury coverage at all.
Home Liability Overflow
Guest injuries and property damage at your home that exceed your homeowners liability limit move to the umbrella. A pool, a dock, and frequent guests are the exposures we ask about first.
Borrowed-car Claims
An owner who lends a car can owe up to $100,000 for each injured person and $300,000 per accident, plus $50,000 for property damage, and more when the driver is underinsured.
Boat Liability
Many umbrellas extend over watercraft once a boat policy with the required liability limit sits underneath. Your umbrella then answers for injuries to guests aboard or to other boaters, above that boat limit.
Legal Defense
Defense of covered lawsuits is included, even claims that turn out baseless. Florida’s negligence filing deadline dropped to two years, down from four, for claims arising after March 24, 2023.
Sits on Your Auto
Every umbrella carrier requires set liability limits on the auto, home, and boat policies underneath. A gap between those limits and the umbrella leaves you paying the difference before it responds.
Leased Car Limits
A leasing company on a lease of a year or longer avoids owner liability if the lease requires $100,000 per injured person, $300,000 per accident, and $50,000 for property, or $500,000 combined. Your umbrella sits above those.
Business-use Vehicles
Florida’s caps on a lending owner’s liability do not protect owners whose vehicle is used for commercial activity in their ordinary course of business. Tell us about any work vehicle so we can check which policy should respond.

Who It’s For
Households That Need an Umbrella
Parents of Teen Drivers
A car titled in your name puts your assets on the line when your teen crashes it, since Florida owners answer for drivers they allow.
Pool and Dock Owners
A serious guest injury at a pool or on a dock can produce a judgment larger than a homeowners liability limit, and the umbrella picks up the excess.
Boat Owners
No Florida statute generally requires recreational boaters to buy liability coverage, so a boat that carries guests depends on the limit you pick and the umbrella above it.
Rental Property Owners
Guest and tenant injury claims at a rental, especially a short-term rental with frequent turnover, can outrun the liability limit on the rental policy.
Our Process
How We Build an Umbrella Quote
Send Your Declarations Pages
Send the declarations pages for every auto, home, boat, and rental policy in the household. We list each liability limit and note teen drivers, pools, docks, and short-term rentals.
We Close the Gaps Underneath
Each carrier sets minimum limits for the policies under its umbrella. We quote higher limits on any that fall short, because a gap means you pay the difference out of pocket before the umbrella starts paying.
Compare Limits and Bind
We quote the umbrella at $1 million and, when your household has two or more higher-risk exposures, at $2 million too. You pick the limit, and we bind the umbrella and any underlying changes together.
“Absolutely thrilled with the service Anna provided for both our car and homeowners insurance. She went above and beyond for us and our savings was remarkable!”

Common Questions
Umbrella Insurance in Florida, Explained
Yes, Florida’s dangerous instrumentality doctrine makes a vehicle owner responsible when someone they allow to drive causes a crash. For an individual owner, s. 324.021(9)(b)3., Florida Statutes, caps that liability at $100,000 for each person hurt and $300,000 per crash, plus $50,000 for property damage. If the driver carries less than $500,000 in combined coverage, or none, the owner faces up to an extra $500,000 in economic damages. The caps never limit what you owe for your own negligence.
No. To register a four-wheel car, FLHSMV asks only for $10,000 in personal injury protection plus $10,000 in property damage coverage. Bodily injury liability becomes mandatory only after certain crashes, unpaid judgments, or a DUI conviction. An umbrella requires bodily injury limits on your auto policy underneath it, so buying one also closes that gap on your own cars.
No, the caps in s. 324.021(9), Florida Statutes, do not apply to an owner whose vehicle is used for commercial activity in the owner’s ordinary course of business. Rental car companies are the exception and keep them. A leasing company is treated differently again, since a lessor on a lease of one year or longer is not the owner at all when the lease requires the driver to carry the statute’s minimum limits.
The 2023 law, signed and effective March 24, 2023, changed two rules that matter for personal liability claims. Under s. 768.81(6), Florida Statutes, a person found over 50% responsible for their own injury now recovers nothing in most negligence cases. The deadline to file a negligence lawsuit dropped to two years, from four. Neither change removes the claims an umbrella exists for, such as a serious injury where you are clearly at fault.
Enough to cover the assets a lawsuit could reach, bought in $1 million layers. We weigh bank and investment accounts and rental properties against the household’s exposures. Teen drivers, a boat that carries guests, a pool, and a short-term rental each raise the odds of a claim above standard liability limits. When a household has two or more of those, we quote a second million alongside the first.
You pay the gap yourself. Every umbrella carrier requires minimum liability limits on the auto, home, and boat policies under it, and the umbrella starts paying only above that required amount. If your auto policy carries less, a judgment lands on you for the difference before the umbrella responds. We review every underlying policy together and quote the umbrella with its required limits as one package.
