Coverage
Auto Insurance in Florida
For Northeast Florida households pairing auto with a home policy, including families adding a teen driver. Florida requires only $10,000 in PIP and another $10,000 for property damage, so we quote the liability limits the state leaves to you.

What’s Covered
What a Florida Auto Policy Covers
PIP Coverage
Personal injury protection covers 80% of medical costs and 60% of lost wages, up to $10,000 per person, no matter who caused the crash. You must get first treatment within 14 days.
Property Damage
Pays for damage you cause to other people’s cars, fences, and property. Florida requires only $10,000, which can fall short against a newer vehicle, so we quote higher limits beside it.
Bodily Injury Liability
Florida does not require bodily injury liability to register a car, yet it pays when you injure someone in a crash and they bring a claim against you. We quote limits matched to what you own.
Uninsured Motorist
Pays your injuries when an at-fault driver has little or no insurance. Florida adds it to any bodily injury policy unless you sign a written rejection, which stays in force until you ask in writing.
Collision Coverage
Repairs to your own car after a crash with another vehicle or object, whoever caused it, minus your deductible. A lender or leasing company will usually require it while the car is financed.
Theft and Storm Damage
Covers theft, vandalism, falling trees, hail, and floodwater, which matters for cars parked on low ground when a storm pushes water inland. It carries its own deductible, separate from collision.
Medical Payments
An add-on that helps with the 20% of medical bills PIP leaves unpaid and with costs above the $10,000 PIP limit, for you and your passengers.
Rental and Towing
Pays for a rental car while yours is in the shop after a covered claim. You can also add towing and roadside help for dead batteries, lockouts, and flat tires.

Who It’s For
Florida Drivers Who Need More Than Minimums
Households With Teen Drivers
As the vehicle’s owner, Florida law can hold you liable when someone you let drive causes a crash, including a newly licensed teen in the household.
Seasonal Residents
A car kept in Florida more than 90 days during a 365-day period must carry the state’s required PIP and property damage limits, even with an out-of-state registration.
New Florida Arrivals
Florida will not register your car until you show proof of PIP and property damage insurance, so we start from your current declarations page.
Homeowners Adding Auto
One agent reviewing your home and auto policies together can set liability limits high enough to support an umbrella policy above both.

Common Questions
Florida Auto Coverage Questions
Every car registered in Florida must carry two coverages, personal injury protection with a $10,000 limit and property damage liability with a $10,000 limit, under ss. 627.733 and 324.022, F.S. Bodily injury liability is not a general registration requirement, so a minimum policy carries no coverage for injuries you cause to others. A vehicle kept in Florida over 90 days within any 365-day period needs the same two coverages, even when its owner lives elsewhere.
Yes, Florida’s no-fault PIP system remains in force as of October 2026. Bills to repeal PIP were filed in 2025 (HB 1181) and 2026 (SB 522 and HB 769), and each one died. Under s. 627.736, F.S., PIP pays 80% of reasonable medical expenses and 60% of lost income, up to $10,000 per person, plus a $5,000 death benefit.
Without an emergency medical condition finding, Florida PIP medical benefits stop at $2,500 instead of the full $10,000. Under s. 627.736(1)(a), F.S., only a physician, osteopathic physician, dentist, physician assistant, or advanced practice registered nurse can make that finding. You must also get initial treatment within 14 days of the crash, or PIP does not have to pay medical benefits at all.
Florida requires bodily injury liability only after certain crashes, an unpaid judgment, or a DUI conviction, not to register a car. After a qualifying crash or judgment, the state can require proof of at least $10,000 per person, $20,000 per crash, and $10,000 property damage, and it suspends your license and registration until you provide it, under ch. 324, F.S. A DUI conviction raises the requirement to $100,000, $300,000, and $50,000 for three years.
Yes, Florida drivers can restore uninsured motorist coverage after rejecting it, but only through a written request to the carrier. Under s. 627.727(1), F.S., every auto policy with bodily injury liability includes uninsured motorist coverage unless a named insured rejects it in writing for everyone on the policy. Once you reject it or choose lower limits, the carrier does not have to restore it at renewal unless you ask in writing.
Yes, PIP shields an at-fault Florida driver from injury lawsuits only to the extent PIP benefits are payable. Under s. 627.737, F.S., an injured person can still sue for pain and suffering when the injury meets the threshold, such as a permanent injury or significant permanent scarring. Owners who lend their cars also carry exposure for those drivers, and our umbrella page explains Florida’s owner liability caps.
